The Do-It-Yourself Conundrum

Growing up I learned that sometimes it was better to learn how to something yourself as opposed to paying someone else. This was most apparent with me helping my father work on the car in the past 10 years. Although the motivation was primarily financial, many times after completing some challenging work there was a great deal of fulfillment. I'd feel satisfied knowing I did something right and I learned something useful in the process. There will always be part of me that wants [...]

Corporate Right to Existence

I guess the great big news in the internet world today is that the United States Supreme Court ruled against the makers of Grokster, a popular file sharing program. Basically if anyone makes something that promotes copyright infringement, then they can be held liable. Now I don't care to discuss the merits of this case. The bottom line, for me, is that I do not see anything wrong in someone actively sueing people who intentionally violate copyrights. However I am at odds with the [...]

Far Away, So Close

I don't remember what I was reading, but I came across the following words. Makes sense to me. It is better to be apart and wish you were together, than it is to be together and wish you were apart. Speaks volumes to [...]

Accomplishments in Life

I remember reading somewhere that the greatest minds put forth their most significant accomplishments before the age of 30. I'm no Einstein, but I don't need to be to see that the potential of my youth is being wasted away. And I don't know what I'm doing. I know I could possibly take some risks or be more aggressive but I just can't seem to find it in me. Sometimes when the sure bet is very convenient it's very hard to find the motivation [...]

Multitude of Opinions as Facts?

An opinion is an opinion? Right? What if one opinion is accepted by majority, then what? ... So I'm reading Bill O'Reilly's April 1rst Talkings Point Memo and he, like most news stations, was giving his view of the Terri Schiavo case: Now all over America, people have chosen sides, which is your right to do. "Talking Points" hopes that you base your opinion on provable facts, not speculation and emotion. New scientific poll by FOX News/Opinion Dynamics indicates the following. If you read [...]

Rode the six hundred

On December 9, 1854, Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem, "The Charge of the Light Brigade," was published in England. Although the poem was written to memorialize the events in the Battle of Balaclava (October 25, 1854), the words still carry a great deal of power today, 150 years later. Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. 'Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns!' he said: Into the valley of Death Rode [...]

Thanksgiving 2004

Okay, I thought I was tired before this holiday. Lots of reflections: When you have a crazy rambunctious 9 yr old, bring lots of rope and duct tape. If someone asks "beer bottle or beer mug?", pick the former. If you feel like you got a cold coming on, don't hug babies who will sneeze and drool all over you. Don't try to take self pictures with digital cameras. If you're half mexican and half indian, and you can neither speak "mexican" nor "indian", [...]

Consult Not Your Fears

I saw this in someone else's cubicle. I found it so relevant, that I had to take a Post-It (tm) note and jot it down. "Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do."Pope John [...]
